Beam

« Back to Glossary Index

The “beam” portion of the deck frame is the section of the framing that usually supports the ends of the joists opposite the house.

A “flush beam” is a beam that is fastened to the ends of the joists, so that the top of the beam is flush with the top of the joists.

A “drop beam” is a beam that rests underneath the joists, which allows the joists to overhang the beam.

The section of the joists that overhangs the drop beam is generally known as the “cantilever.”
