Joists are the cross-members that are typically suspended between the face of the ledger at the house wall, and the inside beam face on the other end. (flush beam setup).
When building a deck with a dropped beam, the joists will be attached to the house at the ledger, but the far end will rest on top of the beam, rather than be fastened into it.
