Many AC and DC lighting systems are available with or compatible with a photosensitive timer.
This timer can sense the ambient light level so that the lighting system will activate a specific amount of time before or after sunset.
Some lighting timers have the photosensor attached to the timer, others have a separate photosensor that can be wired to be placed in a position that has the most access to sunlight.
