Decking milled from the cedar tree of the species Thuja plicata and Thuja occidentalis.
These species of trees generally grow to smaller diameters, so certain sizes of lumber like 4×4 and 6×6 are harder to come by and harder to mill, and thus become more expensive (generally).
Being a softwood species (coniferous), cedar is easy to machine, with a crispy, almost splintery grain. 2×6 boards can usually span 24″ on center when used for decking, and are usually fastened with face screws.
