Stringer

A “stringer” is a piece of lumber cut out to support stair steps from the underside.

Outside stringers that support the ends of the decking treads can be cut out like the other supportive stringers, or can be left uncut, and use brackets mounted to the side stringers to support the tread ends.

Per code, stringers generally have a maximum riser height, minimum tread depth, and maximum variance between each rise height
